What do the Winter Soldier and Spider-Man have in common? Their fighting styles will be referenced by Black Widow’s enigmatic villain, Taskmaster.
It’s been officially confirmed that Black Widow‘s mysterious villain, Taskmaster, will reference characters like the Winter Soldier and Spider-Man. Black Widow is a Marvel movie has been a long time coming, and not just because fans have been clamoring for it for years. Once scheduled for May of this year, Natasha Romanoff’s first solo film has been delayed multiple times due to the coronavirus pandemic. The most recent change bumped Black Widow to May 7, 2021, about a year after its original release date. As a result, fans are stuck waiting longer than expected to uncover the film’s mysteries.

One of those major mysteries pertains to Black Widow‘s big bad Taskmaster. The leader of the Red Room has the ability to mimic the fighting style of anyone he watches, making him a formidable opponent. Fans have already caught glimpses of his moves in the various Black Widow trailers that have been released, but there’s one thing they definitely haven’t seen: His identity. Black Widow has yet to reveal who Taskmaster really is, and Marvel hasn’t even named the actor who’s playing him. In lieu of answers, fans have been left to speculate.
Now something has been confirmed about Taskmaster, though it has nothing to do with his appearance. In Marvel Studios’ Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book, the film’s fight coordinator, James Young, has revealed new details about Taskmaster’s fighting style. Fans already theorized that Taskmaster has knowledge of the Avengers and their moves, and now it’s been confirmed. Young explained:
“Taskmaster has studied the Avengers; in the bridge fight you can see that. You see flashes of Captain America, you see flashes of Bucky, you see flashes of Iron Man, and you see Spider-Man in this sequence. How do you fight someone that can embody all the Avengers at once? The hard part of the fights is to make those moments read, but it’s the moments you’re going to remember.”
It’s no surprise that Taskmaster has adopted Captain America’s moves, particularly since the Black Widow trailers show him using a shield at one point. The Winter Soldier and Spider-Man connections are perhaps especially interesting because they show Taskmaster has truly done his research and perhaps watched the airport battle from Captain America: Civil War. He’s gone even beyond the main lineup of Avengers, which could have dire consequences for Natasha. The Winter Soldier reference also has a deeper meaning, seeing as he has connections to the Red Room in the comics. Could that part of his backstory get added into the MCU?
Now that it’s been confirmed that Taskmaster will be emulating certain Avengers, audiences will likely have a great time trying to pick out each familiar fighting style. As Young said, it’s intended to be memorable, so expect some excellent moves. It’ll be a fun Easter egg for fans to pick up on, especially for those who have been with the MCU for a long time. The only unfortunate thing is that fans still have to wait several months to see Black Widow hit the big screen. As of right now, it is holding onto its May date, and hopefully it won’t suffer any more delays.
