Doctor Strange 2 Is A More Collaborative Process Says Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch described his upcoming second solo outing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a collaborative effort.

Benedict Cumberbatch says that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a collaborative effort. Cumberbatch is set to appear in his second solo outing as the Sorcerer Supreme in early 2022, and anticipation for the film is at an all-time high after the end of WandaVision. The MCU’s first series will lead directly into the Doctor Strange sequel, with Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen having a prominent role in the film alongside Rachel McAdams’ return as Christine Palmer and the debut of Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.

Filming on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently underway in London in what Marvel has described as the MCU’s first horror film. Genre icon Sam Raimi is helming the movie in his return to superhero movies after directing 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Details surrounding the film are being kept under wraps, except for a plot that describes Strange facing a “friend turned enemy” and accidentally “unleashing unspeakable evil” in the process.

Like most other Marvel actors, Cumberbatch has been sworn to secrecy, but he spoke to Collider recently about how filming is going, and it sounds like everything is on track. Cumberbatch praised the collaborative process of Raimi and the ability to be more creatively loose on the film. This is thanks, in part, to the fact that the film will revolve around his character and not be so focused on the overarching story of the MCU like Strange’s previous appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Sam, amazing. He’s so collaborative. God, he comes with the baggage of an icon. He’s an incredible force, especially in this genre. But he’s so humble, he’s so nice, he’s so appreciative, you really wanna serve him. And boy, when he’s happy, you know you’ve done something right. He’s so good at getting you there and getting it there. It’s been a very, very collaborative process, this one. Our origin stories, I guess, and obviously the beasts that were the Avengers films to be a part of were a thrill, but you’re kind of just along for the ride. You do the best with what you’ve already got given to do. The second time around, there’s a bit more of, ‘So, what do you want to do, and how do we go about solving this?’ So it feels very creative. Scarily so, sometimes.

WandaVision Doctor Strange

It certainly sounds like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be a departure for the MCU, especially as the franchise moves past the Infinity Saga and into uncharted territory. Part of that territory seems to be the Multiverse, and WandaVision‘s finale certainly seems to hint at where the Doctor Strange sequel could take fans. With Wanda hearing the voices of her sons Billy and Tommy during the post-credits sequence, it seems like Scarlet Witch may search the Multiverse for them, and this is where America Chavez could come in.

America Chavez works with Billy and Tommy in the comics, and it seems likely Wanda could run into her while in the Multiverse. How all of this will factor in Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange remains to be seen, but fans are likely in for a wild ride when the film premieres. Marvel is seemingly building a Multiverse trilogy with WandaVision, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, making  Cumberbatch’s second solo outing one of Phase 4’s most exciting upcoming films. Raimi returning to both the horror genre and the superhero genre certainly doesn’t hurt, either.
